Watchpost Alaska

Watchpost Alaska

Fading Giants

Glaciers have been in retreat since 1850 as the little ice age ended and now the retreat is accelerating as our planet warms. They are at our mercy while we continue to burn hydrocarbons. Our quite friends are fading. Who will wish them farewell and if they do return, who will welcome them back?  This watchpost is for those who will wait through the ages for the glacial return.

The long wait

The site of our watchpost is the Muir Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska. It has experienced a rapid decline, receding 7 miles since 1941. The watchpost is constructed from a shard of glacial memory to serve as a reminder for the watchers. This rickety post has many warm nights ahead, but always keeps hope for the icy return.
