Hidden Figures
Compound figuration obscures the individuals within a larger composition. Our ability to reconstruct the parts from the composition relies on the rules of perception that govern our mind. In this speculative office building, compound figuration allows direct representation (which is cheesy) to be avoided by placing human figures just outside of our perception.
Knowledge of the figures is for those in the know and for those who look closely. The building’s envelope works like a cloud, interesting on its own formal merits, but containing new forms that the mind can tease out. The viewer of the building becomes a cloud watcher.
