Tuscan Mausoleum

Mausoleum in Tuscany

My interest in hyperbolic paraboloids was spurred by the grace and lightness of Felix Candela's buildings, particularly Iglesia de la Medalla Milagrosa in Mexico City. The hypar's simplicity of definition and construction belies the complexity of its phenomenal impact. It is defined by rigid lines laid out in a continuous sequence, not dissimilar to a fabric whose threads have been pulled taught, but the surface itself is doubly curved.

This mausoleum is a reinterpretation of the ancient Etruscan tombs found throughout Tuscany. It includes a subterranean courtyard beneath a canopy of marble sheets and a burial chamber set into the hillside.

2 ½ Dimensions

The process was excessively two and a half dimensional. Project elements were drafted in a flat view and tilted up into place. Iteration through tilting down with _make2d, redrawing, and excessive use of _orient3pt on line work.
